Hi Valerie! It was suggested to me by halamen to ask your advice on travels through Eastern Europe... I'm planning a 10-day backpacking trip for a friend and myself and we want to hit Budapest, Belgrade, Sarajevo and Ljubljana. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Thanks in advice! :)

Thanks! Yeah, we are hoping and planning on going there in Feb. 2009. May I ask: did you fly to Europe and take a discounted European airline there or did you fly there a different way?
Wow! I love your photos! You have some really great travel experiences and I look forward to reading your blogs!
gotta love Berkeley...lived there for 5 years...it kinda lit the fire under my ass to get the hell out of the states. good meeting you
Hey Valerie, I've been loving the Eastern Europe blogs! Once you get home, are you back in the Bay Area for the summer? Or more travel plans?
I should be in the area in mid-August, planning to loiter around the (free) evening events at Book Passage. I know Jim is going to be there again, too!
Hey Valerie. Thanks for the great tips. Right now, its only Riga for the weekend. I still have my sights on a Baltic road trip in the future.
Hey Valerie
Looks like the bf and I will be in Latvia in 2 weeks. Taking the ferry over from Stockholm. Have you got any recommendations for Riga? Cheers!

About me
I love to wander the world while writing about and photographing my experiences. I grew up speaking and learning multiple languages, a lifestyle that has continued into my adult life. My college strongly encouraged its students to learn about other cultures and to travel abroad, and even after I have graduated I could not put an end to it. I did an internship in London during a summer while I was still in school, and studied abroad in Madrid and Paris the year after I finished. From then on, I was hooked on travel and have been abroad every year since. I have also developed a taste for all sorts of exotic cuisines that I attempt to recreate in my kitchen at home. I try not to bring back any tacky, kitschy souvenirs from my travels, only ones that are practical, consumable and/or useful, such as clothing, food and pottery. My travels have so far taken me to four continents, including a few stints living in Washington, DC, London, Madrid, and Paris. I have a fairly low tolerance for mediocre food. I like meeting new people and am convinced that everyone has a story to tell. My passion is writing and my dream as a travel writer is to introduce others to new lands and cultures they would otherwise be unaware of. I have written for World Hum, Tango Diva, The Travel Channel, Hungry? San Francisco (restaurant guide), Not For Tourists, and soon to be contributor to GrassRoutes Travel guides (a new series of sustainable travel guides).
Why I travel
I want to see as much of what the world has to offer as possible. I believe that travel is the best way in which to learn about other countries, people, and cultures.
Travel style
I usually travel solo, with my rucksack, a limited budget and an open mind. Traveling with others is always a possibility, especially in areas where solo travel is difficult or dangerous. I always like to sample the local cuisine, learn some of the local language, dive headfirst into the culture and way of life. I always enjoy meeting fellow travelers, especially those from other countries, and locals. I love to wander through the streets and take local public transportation and stay in hostels.
Ideal place to watch the sunset
At any beach
Before I die I'd like to
Own a house, travel all 7 continents
I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when
I go out of my way to experience local culture and cuisine.
Let's collaborate
I'm freelance food and travel writer and photographer and would like to collaborate with any publications that need travel stories and photographs from all over the world. I would love to hear from other travel writers - let's network!

Realizing I didn't have $12 in exact cash to pay my bus fare from the airport to Boulder, I knew I wouldn't have time to run back to the transit counter to get a pre-paid ticket. I slipped the $11 I had into the machine, and was about to dig into my change pocket to cover the remaining dollar,...

I was ready to relegate Santiago to the list of places I didn't like.
Pulling into the bus station surrounded by an industrial district of decrepit buildings, I wondered if I'd made a mistake in budgeting 4 nights here. I reminded myself that a similar setting...

I've been on the road for nearly 2 weeks now, just over a week of which I've been in South America. Time really has flown, and I'm just now posting my first blog of the trip.
Landing in the Microcentro of Buenos Aires right off an overnight flight from Houston was certainly overwhelming...

I can safely say that I've traveled widely in my life thus far, but as some members of my family will quickly point out, there is still one glaring omission: China, the land of my ancestors. I actually have been to mainland China twice, as a teenager. But the areas of the country I visited with...

Slovenia has been described as the "cutest" of the former Yugoslav republics, and I couldn't agree more. It's got a blend of Slavic and Alpine (Austrian) cultures, which makes sense. Ljubljana may be small, but at the same time it's so grand that you don't even care. It's like a super...

I was bummed that I couldn't go to Greece this year, but Montenegro and Croatia have been the next best thing. Montenegro's the next Croatia – the same type of cuisine, history and scenery, but without the, prices, notoriety and crowds (though they're starting to catch up). It's a newly...

Our tour leader said that Sarajevo would be the highlight of the tour, and for me it truly is. I've never been to a city quite like this before. It's got a bit of Istanbul, a bit of Vienna. I haven't been to Turkey but I have a feeling that the Turkish quarter is pretty close to what I would...

To be honest, I haven't always dreamed of visiting the Balkans like I'd dreamed of visiting France, Spain or Australia, or still dream of visiting Argentina and Bali. All those news reports of this region back in the '90s definitely made me weary of this region, the way the Middle East would...

I may have learned my lesson about springtime travel in northern/central Europe - it certainly isn't spring in California or fall in Australia. I've developed a serious cold/sore throat and lost my voice this afternoon, probably due to overexposure to the elements. Tomorrow I'll have a bit of...

If I were to describe the people of the Baltics with just one phrase, I would say that they are very forward-looking. Anyone who feared that these former Soviet republics would be lagging behind the rest of Europe would be in for a surprise. Of course, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are still...
