Profile Full Bio

About me

I quit my job in April of 2010 to hike the Appalachian Trail (again) and made it to Harriman State Park in NY (1375 miles). Now I'm getting ready to go to China to teach ESL in Shijiazhuang which is SW of Beijing. I blog and want to write more about traveling - especially getting back out into the world after a few years of settledness. I live carfree and love it.

Why I travel

I love the movement, the new experiences, the wonder of it all. Close to home or far away I am enthralled and inspired.

Travel style

slow land travel - backpacking, trains, buses and road trips. I really don't like to fly but will in a pinch.

Ideal place to watch the sunset

From Snow Mesa along the Colorado Trail looking out to the Grenadier Range

Ideal place to watch the sunrise

from the edge of my tent in the desert of Utah

Before I die I'd like to

Surface travel around the world.

I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when

I trekked in Nepal in 2004. I was challenged in ways I had not experienced before.

Let's collaborate

Would love to write an article for Matador :)

Sports I do

running, biking, backcountry skiing, backpacking

I want to make a difference by

influencing anyone I can to get rid of their car.

Wow. It's been so long since I've posted here. Life has been rich and full. I hiked 1375 miles of the Appalachian Trail this spring then came back to Colorado to prepare for my year of teaching in China. I leave tomorrow! Not sure if I'll be able to access Matador during this time but I will...

Tonight, tomorrow, many people will celebrate the lengthening of days in the Northern Hemisphere. The longest night is upon us.

I, most likely, am in the minority feeling a sense of loss. I love the deep nights as fall progresses and when the clock changes my body clock syncs up. A...

When I think of all the things I want to do in my life, I get a burst of the happy butterflies - excitement mingled with anticipation followed by a quick mental to-do list of what I'd have to arrange in order to make a new plan happen. This causes me to find something(s) to purge immediately....

I've owned my condo for 4 years and it's been a good place for me to live since my work life has required me to stay put. But things have shifted lately and I'm strategizing how I can get busy traveling again. I'm in a great position to do that - other than my part-time job, I have no...

p>So much can happen on a simple, task-related walk. I had a mission and it involved chocolate (Chocolove, strong dark 70% cocoa content for the zealots. It's right here beside me).

Tonight I was trying to write and the cylinders were not firing, so I decided...

Ah grasshopper, you have discovered the easy path of goal setting: choose goals that are already underway or met! I'm going to grow my hair out - hey it's there! Great, check that off...  Donate car to charity - Hey! I did that! check.

    Oh, I know that's cheating...but I DID just...

In the summer of 2000 I volunteered with the US Forest Service in Yakutat, Alaska. "Yak" has received attention in the last few years as a destination for intense surfing, and has long been a place for guided and commercial fishing, but I was not doing anything so exotic. I...

Actually they started to turn a long time ago. The intention was set, the dreams dreamt and movement is happening. I've written before about my desire to bike to the Appalachian Trail and begin another thru-hike. I also felt the pull of continuing my regular work....

Do you want to go out with friends or stay home and have some blessed alone time. Your friends might think you're a party pooper and...
