Thanks man.

In my family we use the term 'uncle' loosely. We have family in Germany, but we're not sure exactly how we're connected... same last name and all, but not sure where the exact connection lies.

Their kids were the same age as my brothers and I so we grew up going back and forth and visiting... so they really were like our cousins, you know.

It definitely was reverse culture shock, which is hard because, well, it's reverse. Culture shock into an incredibly different culture is an act of discovery. Culture shock when you're going back into a similar culture as home is one of re-discovery. It's all very bizarre, and I definitely had a rough time. Adjusting to a new and different culture was an exhilarating adventure, while adjusting back into a familiar one was work, and hard work at that. But once I adjusted, it was definitely a fun time.

Anyway, thanks again for making it all the way through. That's quite the task! Few have gone as far as thou!

Ah, I do what I can to overwhelm people and fully make them think I'm insane. Not very hard when I can't seem to write anything under ten pages, whether it's a blog entry, a novel, or a comment on matador. I like your outfit in your Ready For Anything photo. Is that Prada?

No doubt. Plus Portland is one of the coolest little cities in the world. For a town of only 100k it has a thriving nightlife and awesome food, arts, and (best of all) pubs. I definately recommend it. Be sure to dress warm if you plan to camp out on the beach, especially in the fall... man o man it gets chilly at night. Cheers!

With Every career I've ever embarked upon (there have been two to date) my ultimate goal was not to be rich, but to leave the world a better place than I found it. As a computer/network technician, I generally failed. As a writer, I think I'm getting closer to that goal with pieces like this:...

From the Red to the Blue

One family's correspondance--from Iraq to Chicago, the City to the Country--as Obama was elected. My brother was at Obama's celebration in Grant park. My parents we at the liberal enclave of New Orleans, nestled in the super-redness of Louisiana. My brother's ex-...

Authors note: It's been over two months now. The last part of my therapy is to go "public" with my emotions. Enjoy.

Months ago, we were loading up into a river taxi in the Carribean city of Livingston, in Guatemala. Joining us in our adventure were a group of geriatric women....

"Everyone made fun of Captain Patriquin's moustache," my brother tells me over a few beers. The Army Officer Corps, despite regulations that say they can maintain a moustache that reaches the corner of the lips, has historically frowned upon such "low-level" facial hair. Captain Patriquin--a...

I'm certainly not the first new parent to say "ohmigodhowmylifehaschanged" and "you'llneverunderstanduntilyouhaveyourown". My circumstances have changed, to be sure, but not in a way that is beyond comprehension. I can still make morning coffee, I just do it with one hand. We'll sure as hell...

I've begun to notice that cultural anthropology has a tendency to be very external in nature. The analysis of what makes an area's "culture" is often performed by someone who has no childhood connection to that place. And yet, time and time again, experts on an "area" call upon their experience...

I've long been a hard-headed skeptic of the Internet. As a writer, the internet and I share a love-hate relationship, a delicate economic and social tango. I read articles about online writing with a hypocritically raised eyebrow. Pieces such as Michaela Lola's...

My father embraced technology a long time ago--a fact that I'm not sure is to society's benefit. His communications from his new home in New Orleans are succint and cryptic, often leaving us to discuss their meaning for days after. One such gem:
