About me

I am a travel writer who travels and a traveller that writes. http://www.workingholidaysforaustralians.com/blog http://www.bootsnall.com/articles/tags/kaitlin-mills http://www.workingholidaysforaustralians.com

Why I travel

To totally immerse myself in a new and different culture than my own.

Travel style

I like to travel by myself and really explore the culture, that has yet to happen. But I always end up travelling with family members or strangers so I'm open to any style.

Ideal place to watch the sunset

On a beach in Corfu

Ideal place to watch the sunrise

Sitting freezing in the middle of the Swiss Alps

Before I die I'd like to

Live outside of where I am now.

I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when

I don't know where I am, I don't know how to get back to where I was, I don't speak the language and I don't have a clue what's going on. Which technically means those family dinners could be called exploring the new world.

Let's collaborate

I am a travel writer looking to collaborate with with travel publications in need of an interesting travel article.

Favorite artist(s)

Botticelli

Sports I do

Does getting lost count?

I want to make a difference by

Finding something I can do to make a difference

Tunes I rock out to

The Beatles, Queen, RENT, The Fray.

Favorite books

Depends on what day it is

Favorite Quote:
"Oops" "That was an experience"
Favorite Places:
I have been around to a few different places and it seems unfair to pick just a couple as they all have different memories attached, so these are the places that I have been: Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Memphis, New York, Toronto, London, Bath, Paris, Bordeaux, Nice, Monaco, Pamplona, Barcelona, Rome, Florence, Pisa, Venice, Capri, Sorrento, Greece, Corfu, Vienna, Switzerland, Munich, Heidelberg. Out of my travels I would have to say that Venice captured my spirit the most. I literally got lost in the city and wandered to the opposite of where I was supposed to be. Where instead of tourists and cameras flashing I found Italians, going about their daily lives, shouting phrases that set them into laughter as I passed, calling out to friends, playing games and just living. Florence was another city I only had a glimpse of but loved, the museums, the scrambled art all over the walls, the madness, just everything.
Places I Want To Go:
I don't think I would be a suitable travel writer if I didn't have a whole list to convey, so why disappoint, in no particular order: Lima, the Nazca Lines, Bolivia, La Paz, Salt Flats, America, New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, Greece, Egypt, Cairo, the White Desert, Aswan, Valley of the Kings, Turkey, Italy, Russia, most of Eastern Europe, Canada

The Italian driver slammed on the brakes.

Hannah almost bashed her head against the front windscreen. Sean knuckles had turned white as his grip on the driver’s seat got increasingly tighter as Beth looked out the window, her stare vacant.

Step up, step up, keep climbing, almost there.

    Handrail, slipping, moving backwards.

    Stop.

Moving forward, big step, little step, tripping, almost over.

    Stop.

The Summer Palace had 68,000 people walk through its gates before I arrived there at ten to one in the afternoon on a not uncommon smoky day. Latching onto the end of my tour group as they quickly moved inside the gates I have to wonder if I would see all 68,000 people.

It shouldn’t have been culture shock. They were speaking English, they didn’t look strikingly un-similar to us, there was only an average number of people populating the country, but all the same something still didn’t quite fit.

It doesn’t matter where in the world you go, guaranteed there will always be the same seven people hovering around you. While they may change faces, clothes, gender and hairstyle the fact is that their personality seems destined to follow you to the ends of the earth.

    What is Travel?

To some it’s getting from Point A to Point B. These people don’t enjoy getting from one point to another, the journey is not why they set out, they simply want to get to that end point.

But then that end point changes, once you have gotten to Point B there is...

Sitting there, the humid wind whistling across my face from the open window, a vague feeling of unease settled in my chest as we passed through the Airport Exit. I looked over at Dad, he was chattering away, filling me in on the happenings of the family that I had missed while I...
