About me

I'm a 22 year old Canadian teaching English in Taiwan. I love the ocean and my overriding goal is to never spend any time away from it.

Why I travel

Have you ever been to Canada? It's so freakin' cold. So I had to leave, and the more I saw of the rest of the world the more I wanted to see.

Travel style

I would like to live in, and spend time in, a lot of different places and get to know them well. I like to go deeper rather than farther.

Ideal place to watch the sunset

Koh Tao, Thailand, sipping Laokao and fanta on a balcony

Ideal place to watch the sunrise

The beach, around a bonfire

Before I die I'd like to

Become fluent in the four most spoken languages in the world: English, French, Spanish, and Chinese.

I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when

Drinking whiskey on long train rides.

Let's collaborate

I'm a writer looking to collaborate with print or online publications who are interested in insightful articles about Taiwan, ESL teaching, or a variety of other topics.

Sports I do

surfing, windsurfing, yoga

I want to make a difference by

Protecting the ocean and the coast, fighting poverty in small ways, undermining sexism and homophobia, and preventing violence against animals.

Tunes I rock out to

Bob Marley, Radiohead, The Talking Heads, Andrew Bird, Beirut, and whatever they're playing locally (depending...not a fan of T-pop).

Favorite books

The Dhammapada, The Old Man and the Sea, The Crazed by Ha Jin

When I arrived in Taiwan to teach English, I would never have imagined that I would be onstage dressed as Santa Claus and dancing to Lady Gaga's "Just Dance", while three of my Chinese co-teachers yelled "Shake your bum-bum!". That's what I got though. Life's a box of chocolates I guess.

I just made a new website about learning Chinese, and I'm really excited to be writing regularly again. It's a little less creative this time, because it's a business venture in affiliate marketing rather than something really creative, but I like it just the same. The Website is...

Well, I lost my job a week ago. I was pretty surprised, but I shouldn't have been because I understood all along how volatile English Teaching positions can be and how little English teachers are valued right now. I was asked very forcefully to sign a cancellation of contract agreement, because...
