thanks for your lovely comment on my post Anne!
i just checked out your blog - it's great and i love the pic of turkey in the snow. I'm actually looking into doing a TEFL course very soon. do you have any recommendations on an online versus weekend course?
cheers
Bec
Anne,
How long are you in Korea?
Ottawa is going alright. I love this place in the summer, but the winters get to me after a month or two. the snow is beautiful and the skiing has been fabulous this year, but I miss the warmth and the daylight. Went to Brazil last February, so maybe that's why this winter seems particularly daunting.
It's so nice to be close to family and old friends for the time being though. we are all spreading out over the world so it's hard to say when the next time will be.
Looking forward to the move that's for sure.
(also looking forward to reading your blogs:)
take care! B

About me
Since graduating university, I've been working as an English teacher in various places abroad, with some travels in between jobs. I have taught in Thailand, England, South Korea and Turkey. I know a lot of people enter this line of work as a means to travel, but I find it very gratifying and have learned a lot about local cultures by communicating with students.
I am currently working in Istanbul, teaching adults, and feeling grateful for such a good life.
I love writing creative pieces and personal essays. I blog about the overseas TEFL biz at http://annemerritt.blogspot.com

I often forget about Halloween when I'm overseas. It seems that outside of North America, the holiday is only acknowledged by expat bars and club promoters pushing the costume thing. I'm not even a big dress-up person to begin with. Once I aged past the trick-or-treating stage, Halloween has...

My mother and father are a hardworking pair. My childhood was peppered with absences, short and long, while my parents traveled for work. Their returns were marked with exotic gifts for my brother and I; Russian dolls, Italian candies; tiny Japanese jewelry boxes. What's more, in family...

Back in Canada, as I was packing for Turkey, I fretted about clothes day and night. I scoured travel books, travel blogs, photo after photo online, trying to figure out typical (non-offensive) dress in this part of the world. I was headed to Istanbul, a place that most of my resources described...

I met a new type of traveler, on a recent trip to Jamaica. They're not quite tourists and they're not quite expats, and while they may seem to belong in the same camp as retired Florida-bound snowbirds, they are certainly not.
While they all had different stories, their relationships...

Something Yellow This Way Comes
For weeks, my Korean friends had been warning me about yellow dust season.
"Do you have a face mask?" they ask, wielding their own surgeon's masks in Hello Kitty and Louis Vuitton prints. "Do you have a jacket to wear? And glasses?" They cringe...

As a traveler, I love taking photographs. While scenery and landscapes are well and gorgeous, my favourite pictures are shots of local people in everyday activities. To me, these photos are intimately telling of a culture; an old woman selling live eels in a market; men playing checkers in a...

Anyone who goes overseas for long periods of time runs the risk of waking up in their exotic surroundings and finding themselves (gasp!) bored. It's a guilty feeling, to be bored abroad. You assume you're being idle, and not taking full advantage of your circumstances. But to live and work and...

My new job has me commuting across town three times a week, and my iPod has been getting a lot of exercise. I've discovered that I often associate certain songs with certain people, or places, or periods of my life. There are some songs that, while not affiliated with any concrete memory, always...

I've been excited about Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd for months, and last weekend, I finally saw it. The film was true cinema escapism, a fusion of some of my favourite things; Johnny Depp, dark comedy, singing, and London.
But as we learn in Todd's...
