Condecco
Condeco is a popular café that has four different locations all over Gothenburg. They had taken on the American café tradition of complex coffee drinks and a wide selection of muffins, brownies and smoothies. All four locations also offer wireless, meaning you can spend the whole afternoon caffeinating and journaling.

A trendy chain that has cafés all over Sweden, Espresso House is Gothenburg’s place to be seen.

Café Vallgatan
The modern and stylish interior of Café Vallgatan makes you want to stay for hours. The background is always influenced by hip international jazz and the clientele follows suite. A great place for a midday meal as they have a variety of lunch specials with everything from red curry, to greek salad to meatballs.

Another Vasastan favorite. Perfect when you’re looking for more upscale food without the upscale price, or if you just want to spend the evening drinking a few glasses off of their superb wine list.

For those not on a budget, Heaven 23. Located on the 23 floor of the Gothia Hotel, there is no other restaurant in Gothenburg with the same outstanding view.

Pasta e Panini
The best part about this restaurant, besides the renowned panini, is the interior courtyard that is open during the summer season. A popular place with the local student crowd.

Café Husaren
A charming small café in the historic Haga neighborhood. They are locally known for their Swedish cinnamon roll and chocolate cake, which is rumored to be the best in Gothenburg.

Evas Paley
A Gothenburg institution, homemade baked goods fill the window display, making it hard to walk by and not go in. Situated at the top of Avenyn close to the Poseidon statue.

Nightlife

Berså Bar
Gothenburg is not always big on happy hour, so the daily “after-work” that is offered at Bersa Bar is much appreciated and makes the place fill up fast. Even more popular is the free buffet on Friday’s. Good local Swedish pub feel with a mixed age group.

Jazzhuset Restaurang
Music restaurant and bar featuring jazz and beyond. Thursday night is club night and features a younger crowd that show up for the alternative and live music shows.

If you like loud music and sweaty dancing, this is the bar to be at. Sticky Fingers often has live concerts and is popular with the “I can dance all night crowd” who takes advantage of the four floors all playing different genres of music.

One of the trendiest places to be seen in Gothenburg. Here you will find Swedish fashion and trends at their best. Sponsors different themed club nights and also puts on various live shows.

A casino, nightclub and bar all in one. In the heart of Vasastan, Valand attracts the student aged partier ready for an intense night out.

Hotel Vasa
This hotel has a great central location, close to shopping and restaurants of Kungportsavenyn and the café culture of Vasastan.

A family owned hotel, Hotel Poseidon has a certain simple Swedish charm. Plus breakfast is included.

Slottsskogens Hostel
A Hostelling International hostel, this place offers impeccable Swedish design and service for a good deal. From here you are close to Linnégatan which is known for its cafés and bars as well as Gothenburg’s largest park: Slottsskogen. The hostel also has apartments available for those on a longer stay.

Vandrarhem Stigbergsliden
If you want a view over the harbor and a historical atmosphere, this is the place to book. The building was once upon a time a meeting point for sailors docking in the Gothenburg harbor. To really take advantage of the maritime location wake up early so you can take advantage of the local fish auction in the harbor. The hostel is also certified through the Gothenburg Environmental Administration, meaning that your stay is also eco-friendly.

Göteborgsfestivalen
Göteborgsfestivalen, or the Gothenburg Culture Festival, is the summer’s best, craziest, and most unique mix of culture and music. This is the time that Gothenburg locals look forward to. For a week the streets turn into a madhouse of people from every background, every part of town and every age coming together to simply celebrate the good life.
The festival features big name bands from Sweden and abroad hosted on two different stages in the heart of the city. Beyond music, there is a wide selection of food and drink, turning the downtown area into one big outdoor gathering place. And the best thing about Göteborgsfestivalen? It’s free.

Transportation

Gothenburg’s buses, trams and ferries are run by Väst Trafik, linking the city and the surrounding region by an extensive network.
Buss – Buses
Buses run in the downtown area of Gothenburg as well as out into the rest of the region. The main junction for city buses is Brunnsparken while the majority of regional buses leave from the train station at Drottinggatan.
Spårvagn – Tram
Gothenburg’s spårvagn connect the city’s major neighborhoods and suburbs.
Nattrafik – Night traffic
Night owls can get home even in the wee hours thanks to Nattrafik. Both busses and trams have late-night schedules. Friday and Saturday nights offer more frequent departure times.
Biljetter – Tickets
All of Väst Trafik’s network, buses, trams and ferries, run on the same ticket system, making traveling throughout the Gothenburg region simple. Tickets purchased directly from the driver cost 20 SEK. Tickets can also be purchased in advance from Tidpunkten or Pressbyrån.
If planning on using public transportation a lot during your stay, consider investing in a pass. The most basic pass is Maxirabatt 100, worth 100 SEK, and can be used on all modes of public transportation ends up giving you a 30% discount on any trip, no matter what the distance. Other passes include weekly and monthly and can all be purchased at Tidpunkten or Pressbyrån.
