Bogota, Colombia
It all depends on your budget, but if you are a back packer or a BOSS Baller, you can make your stomach real happy here. Some of my favorite restaurants include:
1) Cafe de la montana - $3-10 a meal, I recommend el menu del dia...you can't go wrong. There are several of these restaurants around the city) 2)La Pesquera Jaramillo $15-$35 a meal. This restaurant is more upscale so you can't wear your flip flops. The seafood will make you go bonkers. 3) Casa Vieja - $8-12 this is a very traditional Colombia restaurant where you can get some real good Ajiaco, Bandeja Paisa or Sancocho (traditional dishes from Bogota, Medellin and the Carribean).
Nightlife also known as "Rumba" en Colombia. Bogota has a wide variety of different scenes. The best action is in the Candelaria (the older part of town). Some of my favorites include: Gato Gris, Quiebra Canto and La Casa de Citas (this is an old brothel turned into a bar that often has live music). Another place that is worth checking out is Andres Carne de Res. Really good food and even better Rumba. It is located just outside the city and is a $15 cab ride.
If you are looking to party more upscale you can head to La Zona Rosa and walk about La Zona T which is filled with nice bars, clubs and restaurants (lots of lady friends).
On the carribean it is all about Vallenato, Cumbia and Reggaeton. In Cali, Salsa. In Los Llanos Orientales (Villavicencio, Aruaca) Joropo. In Bogota, Merengue and other traditional music called San Juanero and Pasillos. Salsa from Cali is still my favorite.
Platypus is a popular Hostel among back packers and is located "La Candelaria". In the northern part of the city this is this great bed and breakfast called "La Mansion" located between la Calle 107 and Carrera 15. It is more quiet and has a great breakfast (fresh squeezed juice, scrambled eggs, toast and coffee or hot chocolate.
If you are planning to live long term and are not that worried about money, Chico, La Cabrera, Rosales, Santa Ana and Santa Barbara are the nicest neighborhoods for living if you want something quiet, clean and comfortable.
If you are looking for more of a university scene, your best bet is La Candelaria, Palermo and Chapinero Alto. This places are not as expensive, have good restaurants and good nightlife close by.
Monserrate, the Gold Museum and the Salt Cathedral.
Chevere! This is like Cool or Awesome.

Thanks for the info! I'm coming in february and am super excited. How hard is it if you don't speak spanish? I was in costa rica in may and got along farely well.
Hi Lindsay,
You will do ok in most places, but if you spend some good time here you will learn quickly. Let me know when you are coming down and we can meet up. Mucha suerte,
