Keeping entertained in Perth and Freo, Western Australia

Eats

Meat pies were a staple while I was living in WA, Jester's, a chain, has very good, very cheap pies.

The Fremantle Market has a few food stalls also, all of which are great: a fantastic crêperie, a kabab/gyro place, a burger and hot dog stand (including kangaroo burgers), and a sushi and bubble tea stand.

The Little Creatures Brewery also has some great food (and beer - the Bright Ale was my favorite).

Also check out the Margaret River Chocolate Factory, which has a Swan Valley location (near Perth). It's actually included on a lot of local wine tours.

Nightlife

Generally, Freo is where the super-hipster popped-collar type nightclubs are, Perth and Northbridge are where all the funky, alternative kind of nightclubs and bars are.

The Newport in Freo is usually pretty bumping and regularly features local music acts.

I was once dragged to the Northbridge nightclub Connections. Although it's a gay club, it's popular among a pretty large crowd and most known for it's Wednesday night "lesbian mud wrestling."

Music

The Fremantle Cemetery is the final resting place of AC/DC frontman Bon Scott.

Best neighborhoods

Northbridge in Perth is a very hip artsy area. It's just opposite the train station in central Perth. Perth proper is very modern, but Northbridge still has elements of the area's frontier roots. Northbridge is home to the Connections nightclub (longest continuously running LGBT nightclub in the southern hemisphere), the Brass Monkey, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Western Australian Museum, among other things. Northbridge is generally considered the cultural center of the area.

Sporting

Australians do love their sports. The area has two footy teams: the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Dockers.

The area is also great for aquatic sports whether you're just learning or a pro, especially surfing and scuba diving (I learned to scuba dive while I was there).

Must See

The Fremantle Weekend Market is great - there are a variety of stalls: fresh local produce, clothes, souvenirs, hammocks, jewelry, way too much for me to list here.

I also enjoyed the Western Australian Museum, there are some great exhibits, and there's no required admission, just donation.

King's Park in Perth quite beautiful, and the city has some great shopping areas - the High Street - St. John's area is one of the most popular areas.

The Fremantle Prison is also worth checking out. The "ghost tour" is pretty hokey, but the history is fascinating.

Transportation

The Perth area has a pretty comprehensive bus system, there's also a train that travels between Freo and Perth (trains leave every fifteen minutes), the train also stops at Cottesloe Beach.

Safety

Use common sense. As with any metro area, theft and muggings do occur.

Useful phrases

Freo = Fremantle

Double-you - A = Western Australia

Footy = Australian Rules Football

Practical travel tips

Keep an eye out for art festivals and other cultural events. It's a very artsy, hippy-ish area.

Other

There are some great movie theaters around Perth and Freo - the Luna cinemas regularly show great Australian movies, foreign films, and other movies you're not likely to see anywhere else (two of my favorites were Cave of the Yellow Dog and Ten Canoes).

WA is known for its boutique wines, and I recommend going on a wine tour, or otherwise trying out some of the regional wines on your own.
