About me:

I'm teaching English at a university in Mostar, as well as to a group of Muslim high school students. I guess this isn't so special--there are thousands of Americans all over the world teaching English overseas--but that doesn't mean each of us isn't having our own special ordeals or breakthroughs in the places we live.

I'm fired up on:

Getting together with internationals in Mostar, cooking good food, drinking local (domaci) wine and sharing our experiences of life in Bosnia; drinking away the bad and toasting the good. When it comes to writing, I'm more interested in conveying the feeling or impression I got in a place, rather than what I did there. I pay attention to small revelations or intimate discoveries about my attitude and perspective while I'm traveling. Maybe I went somewhere many people have been, but I want it to seem like it's being re-discovered somehow.

Tunes I rock out to:

I don't plug in as I travel (bad for equilibrium, and the first time you fall off a train platform, you will know what I mean), but I like to listen when I write: Joanna Newsom, Jens Lekman, Feist, Hem, Electrolane, and Jorge Ben.

Travel style:

With a plan and the sense to abandon the plan.

I'm writing more this year about my experiences as a teacher within a system that really makes it difficult to teach; much of the difficulty is tied up in the culture and the war of 92-95, which has led to a lot of apathy. I would like to hear from other people who have been in this region to get other perspectives on the attitudes I encounter here.
