The world is a wonderful place, but if I had to choose, I would say Kenya, Turkey, and of course Italy.

Places I want to go to:

I dream of going to Papua New Guinea, Zanzibar, the Cook Islands... also would love to see the mountain gorillas in Uganda.

About me:

I worked in a hospital in Guatemala City just after the ceasefire in 1996, lived in a hut on the African savannah, lived in England during the Mad Cow Disease scare (can't donate blood because of this), slept under the stars in the Australian Outback, and gotten my rental car stuck in the capillaries of a Sicilian mountain village. I do medical/science writing as a day job, and freelance travel writing at night.

I'm fired up on:

My first love was anthropology and I'm still obsessed with foreign cultures. Describing a place through narrative and short story seems more truthful to me than the third person.

Travel style:

I usually travel for several weeks. It allows me to get a better sense of the place, and it sometimes takes me at least a week to get into the traveling groove. I often travel alone because it seems like not many others have the time, or desire, to do travel like I do. I'm an independent traveler. Tours and package deals are my idea of the seventh circle of Hell.

Who I'd like to meet on my travels:

Paul Theroux. I'd like to ask him why he's so grumpy, and if he really remembers all those conversations or just makes them up.

I want to make a difference by:

Writing books. Books have given me so much pleasure and helped me so much in my life, that if I can write one (or two?) to which others can relate, I will feel fulfilled.

Languages spoken, other than English:

Spanish, French, Italian, German (a little)

I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when:

I do what the locals do: ride the public transportation, find that out of the way locals restaurant, sit in a nondescript park where children play far from tourist sites.

Why I travel:

I have always had the urge to travel. There's nothing like the thrill of beginning a journey: what will happen, who will you meet, will the place be like your expectations (it usually is not), what will the food taste like? When I'm at home, I'm planning my next trip.

Ideal place to watch the sunrise:

The Serengeti, Kenya

Ideal place to watch the sunset:

Santorini, Greece

Before I die I'd like to:

Publish a travel book, see the mountain gorillas in Uganda, go to Papua New Guinea.
