One of the best things about living in NY is the embarrassment of cultural riches--and particularly the amazing museums. If you love the scale of The Frick, and its domestic feel, then you might also enjoy the Neue Galerie (a gem of a museum founded by Ronald Lauder and specializing in German and Austrian art--Klimt of the Kiss fame) or the Morgan Library with its amazing Rembrandts and new Renzo Piano addition. My favorite place to start off the weekend continues to be Friday night at the Met. On Friday and Saturday nights, the museum is open until 8:45 and from 5 onward, you can take a seat in the balcony and listen to live classical music and have a glass of wine overlooking the Great Hall, one of NY's greatest public spaces. It's a great place for a date or for getting together with an art-loving friend. Lesser known museums that are wonderful are The Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side (I don't know anyone who has been who hasn't loved it. Make a reservation in advance); The Folk Art Museum, next to MoMA; The Cooper Hewitt is good for anyone interested in design; and the New Museum for Contemporary Art will be great once its reopened on the Bowery. As for museums a little off the beaten path, but great places to escape for the day, some of my favorites are 1) DIA Beacon on the Hudson, a train ride away--a must for anyone interested in Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, and art from the 1960s to the present; 2) Storm King--a sculpture park in the Hudson River Valley, a wonderful place to spend the day.
