ROTW - Luke Vibert "I Love Acid"

By The Bizness  |  Location: United States  |  02/21/07  |  Pics: 2

For those of you that don't know or couldn't care less, he is referring to the little squigley sound in the backround, not the drug.

However, the video looks like an acid trip and he DEFINITELY has taken some acid (What? Take a look at him! I kind of like those little pony tail/sumo wrestler things...

EDUCATION - Fela Kuti

By The Bizness  |  Location: United States  |  02/12/07  |  Pics: 4

Although I found it hard to get into the groove with afro-beat at first (I had a similar issue with reggae for some reason when I was younger), it's well worth the effort. There is some amazing music from this genre from over the years. I would imagine THE most influencial coming from Fela Kuti.

From...

EDUCATION - Roy Ayers

By The Bizness  |  Location: United States  |  02/01/07  |  Pics: 3

Once one of the most visible and winning jazz vibraphonists of the 1960s, then an R&B bandleader in the 1970s and '80s, Roy Ayers' reputation s now that of one of the prophets of acid jazz, a man decades ahead of his time. A tune like 1972's "Move to Groove" by the Roy Ayers Ubiquity has a crackling...

Digable Planets - 9th Wonder (Blackitolism)

How good were these guys? I hear there are three albums, but I've only heard two of them. Blowout Comb has been in my cd player since I found out about it. This comes highly recommended. New York's finest.

Roxy Music - Angel Eyes/The Main Thing

I had heard of these guys a long time ago. You can usually find their records up on the wall at your local vinyl dealer (and they are GREAT - covered in scantily clad women) at unusually high prices. Well, until recently I never picked one up. And now I thank...

UPDATE - Sound Clips Added!!!

By The Bizness  |  Location: United States  |  01/25/07  |  Pics: 0

Put the links in the text of ROTW entries. Sorry I can't figure out how to do full MP3s yet so you have to go to record store sights to listen. Also I'll add youtube clips where I can find them.

Strafe - Set It Off

Basically this song does what is says on the tin. Sets the party Off with a capital "oh". I've played this out many times, most notably at a halloween party up in Eugene during college, and people seriously freak out. It is underground enough that most people don't know it yet...

Aleem - Get Loose

In a time where drum machines began to rule over real life drummers people were still putting out proper music. This little ditty, produced by Leroy Burgess and the Aleem brothers, is an electro classic. It's great on the dancefloor and Leroy's vocals are right on point again....

Eric B and Rakim - Paid In Full (Coldcut's 7 minutes of madness)

A little less obscure this week and an all time cross over classic. You know it, we love it...that's right - Eric B and Rakim's "Paid in Full" (Coldcut's 7 minutes of madness mix). I'm fairly certain that if you haven't heard this...

Record of the Week (ROTW)

By The Bizness  |  Location: United States  |  01/08/07  |  Pics: 1

This week I'm going to take it back a little bit. I'm not much of a believer in God or anything, but there have been some pretty nice pieces of music made in celebration of The Dude.

"Stand On The Word" was first ever recorded live in the First Baptist Church in Crown Heights, NYC, in 1982. Soon...

Kano - I'm Ready

Well, after a short lived stay at some New Years party, and then a search for the follow up after everyone had been booted, I've come to love these guys that Matt Huntington is friends with that play records. Nice selection across the board, but for me the record of the night, and...

Land Yacht Birthday Party Pub Crawl

By The Bizness  |  Location: United States  |  11/13/06  |  Pics: 2

The girlie's friend turned 25 this weekend and decided to pub crawl across the city in a limo. 20 people pay $30 bucks and starting at 9:00, visit 7 Irish pubs from the Richmond to other places that I can't remember.

Sure, we've all seen the party buses out in force in North Beach. I've always kind...

Record Stores Around The Globe

By The Bizness  |  Location: United States  |  10/19/06  |  Pics: 1

So if there are any other vinyl vultures out there you know that the BEST way to start getting to know a city is by record shopping. Yeah, you might end up spending every minute of daylight crawling into seas of cardboard boxes trying to flip over that last record to see if that cosmic classic that has...
