World War II Memorial is Washington's best monument

By Rick the Spo...  |  Location: United States  |  07/07/08  |  Pics: 4

As a native Washingtonian, I'm often asked by tourists what's my favorite monument. For many years, I said the Washington Monument. The pencil. It stood tall. Simple, yet elegant.

But I've changed my mind since the World War II Memorial opened a couple years ago. It is in a perfect location between...

Cherry Blossoms in Washington

By Rick the Spo...  |  Location: United States  |  03/29/08  |  Pics: 6

The smartest tourists come to Washington in late March-early April for the cherry blossoms. I was reminded of it the other day when driving across the Tidal Basin area where tourists flock to see the trees bloom. I snapped off a few photos from my car to post that actually aren't half bad.

Mostly,...

Super Bowl mania and I was a maniac

By Rick the Spo...  |  Location: United States  |  01/29/08  |  Pics: 0

It's the biggest week of the year in U.S. sports. The Super Bowl. No detail too small, no activity too outrageous during the week of parties.

For six Super Bowls, I was among those 5,000-plus reporters trying to inform the world of what they already knew -- it's a lot of fun. Most days, you'll hear...

Washington's National Cathedral

By Rick the Spo...  |  Location: United States  |  12/11/07  |  Pics: 3

Want to see an old Roman church in Washington, D.C.? The National Cathedral is the closest thing I've found since touring Italy last summer.

The world's sixth largest church is celebrating its 100-year anniversary despite finishing the final construction in 1990. You may recognize the church from...

Saying goodbye to another Washington monument

By Rick the Spo...  |  Location: United States  |  09/22/07  |  Pics: 1

Baseball is leaving RFK Stadium on Sept. 23 for a new shiny stadium next season just a couple miles away. Another of Washington's monuments will be overlooked once more.

RFK was D.C. Stadium in 1961 when opening for the Senators and Redskins teams. It became RFK in 1969 to honor slain presidential...

If you meet a Washingtonian, do not be afraid . . .

By Rick the Spo...  |  Location: United States  |  09/16/07  |  Pics: 1

We're really not scary people. We don't heat our homes burning piles of tax money. We don't spit on tourists. We don't act like we know what's good for the rest of the nation.

As I travel the country, people often ask what's it like to live in the nation's capital, like it's some sort of...

Washington, D.C. is my home

By Rick the Spo...  |  Location: United States  |  09/10/07  |  Pics: 0

Coming soon. Too late tonight to start, but I hope you'll return soon to know what it's like living in one of the world's power cities. But here's one point I hope you'll learn -- it's WASHINGTON, D.C. Not DC and don't forget the comma.
