We spent five months traveling overland from Georgia to China - through Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan - and can advise on anything from itineraries for mountain and history buffs to navigating hellish visa bureaucracies to how to stay well-fed if you're a vegetarian. I'm fired up on:

ordinary people doing extraordinary things and micro-finance. On a less serious note, I love baking: everything from apple pies to chocolate chip cookies (I really miss not having an oven while on the road)

Travel style:

with a backpack, but I'm a bit older than the average backpacker. I try to understand a place and its people by first checking out the food markets, traveling by public transport and just being open and approachable.

bringing awareness to little-known countries by showing a personal face and sharing human stories - it's harder to dismiss a country when you have a connection to it.

in the middle of a food market with strange smells, foods, sounds and animals all around me.

Why I travel:

To learn more about the world, people, but also myself. Sounds cheesy, but personal growth and travel are closely related in my book.
