Favorite places I've been:
Maine. The Adirondacks. Tourist Club, Marin. Pitchers Mound in Little League. Montana. Peru-Bolivia-Chile-Argentina. Whit Sunday Islands. Road tripping New Zealand's South Island. Fiji. Barcelona. Ring of Kerry. Florence. Holland. St. John's Virgin Islands. Cape Elizabeth Cottage in Maine. Laos. Thailand.

Places I want to go to:
Anywhere but Hartford, Connecticut. In particular: Scotland. Vancouver, Canada. Denver, Colorado. South Africa. Egypt. Japan. Cuba. Antarctica. A World Cup game.

About me:
Laughing is useful. I hate touching wet plastic bags. I like hidden valley ranch dressing. Between the ages of 10 and 14, I slept in a tent in my back yard during the spring. I played in a steel drum band. I was the worst player of a steel drum band. I won a bowline tying contest in 6th grade with a time of 1.45 seconds. A grown man pee'd in my car during ride share from Berkeley to San Francisco. This was displeasing.

Hey man, I've never been to Hanoi, always wanted to go...Halong Bay will no doubt be a trip.

Tom Gates knows where to eat dog in Hanoi:

I stayed in Positano with two friends and traveled the Amalfi Coast during the day. It is best to rent a car (if you are brave!) but we took buses and boats, and had a blast.
It was off season, so rooms were cheaper. We rented a big room at http://www.larosadeiventi.net/rates.htm
It was beautiful, but I'm sure you can find better rates if you are traveling high season, or if you are splitting a villa with a bunch of people. Other towns to base your trip out of could be: Sorrento, Praiano, Amalfi...
Have you been to this site? http://www.wantedineurope.com/ If you find yourself in a major city, this is a great source to find housing, including sublets and summer villas.
If you fly into Rome, you can take the train to Naples, then to Pompeii/sorrento then get a bus to Positano. There are no trains that arrive there. Of course, driving the coast with music blaring and no crowds would probably be your best bet. Have fun! Let me know if I can be of any help.

As advertised, matador folks in SE Asia met up in Chiang Mai last night and while we're still tallying the results, exit polls suggests it was an unmitigated success.  The cast of characters included Tim Patterson, Colin Stewart, Rob, Mary Johnson, Becky, myself, and we picked up some party people...

I will be posting much more on Matador in short order, but for now my computer timer is about to hit 60 minutes and we all know what that means to cheap-ass travelers...
