I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when:

Drinking Obushera (a thick and brown fermented drink served at room temperature that begins to bubble of its own accord if left sitting in a cup too long) in the sitting room of a wonderful family in Uganda. We road in a dug out canoe across Lake Bunyezi, climbed up a narrow dirt path, sliding alongside herds of goats and chickens, to partake in this traditional home brew that my friend Arthur insisted was non-alcoholic... though as my girl Patti and I were the only two to finish our cups, and were quickly overcome with giggles of the dizzy sort, I would safely assert that something in the grainy bitter chalk aftertaste alters the drinkers disposition more than a typical Stoney Tangawizi (the local ginger soda, and my first choice Ugandan beverage...).

Why I travel:

To learn and understand. To grow towards enlightenment. Because when I am not traveling I feel stagnant and stir-crazy. In motion, it's more like stirling-crazy.

Ideal place to watch the sunrise:

Toes in the sand, hair in the wind, and with some general idea that it is that late/early. Those sunrises that come as surprises are of a specific breed...

Ideal place to watch the sunset:

Across water, with a refreshing beverage and the comfort of an interesting conversation on pause due to the sheer beauty of the moment.

Live.
