If you must know: It's none of your business ;-) Travel status: Putting down roots Favorite places I've been: Hard to say as different places have differing good and bad points. For instance Kenya has great wildlife, people, beaches. Indonesia has fascinating culture and both countries either have cool, pleasant climates or humid/sweaty ones, depending on altitude. So you could be in heaven or hell in either one.
Places I want to go to: China, Korea, Vietnam, New Zealand, the Pacific islands, Hawaii, Cuba, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatamala, Bolivia, Mexico, Ecuador, Belize, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia, Mali, Ghana, Congo, Tanzania, Botswana, Cabo Verde, Croatia, Albania, Egypt, Oman, Yemen, Jordan.
About me: Have have been travelling pretty much all my life. Nearly born in France, while parents en route to East Africa, overland and by boat. However, made first appearance in Uganda where Dad was British colonial official. Lived first nine years of life there, as sun finally setting on British Empire. When Uganda became independent in 1963, family returned to England by passenger liner. Did not know it then but another era was also on wane, of big boats as usual way of getting around globe. Jets still only for super-rich. School in England until 16 when father got another job in East Africa, this time in Kenya. Nairobi was a great place to live for a teenager in the 1970s. Like other kids I wore tie dyed tee shirts, long hair and tight flared trousers. Pool parties, big-game viewing trips to the highlands and beach holidays were highlights of that time. Stayed five years. Parents moved to Paris and I went to college in London, studying media. Went alone to Thailand in early 1980s. Freelance wrote and photographed for newpapers and airline magazines. Great gig travelling round Malaysia taking photos for Thai International airline. Full time work on one of Bangkok's English language dailies, The Nation, editing their travel magazine, Saen Sanuk. Ten days a month spent away from office, travelling all parts of Thailand, writing and photographing. Stayed in country most of '80s. Two visits to Australia where have lots relatives. Hitch-hiked from Sydney to Noosa, Queensland. One driver had farm in Coonamble. He invited me to stay. Spent week fixing fences, mustering sheep on horseback, shovelling manure. In Sydney freelanced for newspapers and ABC radio before heading for Singapore. In Indonesia 1991-4, under General Suharto dictatorship, wrote for London agency Gemini News Service and radio reported for Deutsche Welle, Germany's international broadcaster. Taught English on the side. Life threatened by authorities for controversial reporting. Moved to Cape Town, South Africa, sister's home, for a year, where found work on daily Cape Times & Argus. Moved on to Mozambique on radio assigment for Deutsche Welle. Next in Portugal's beautiful capital, Lisbon, for another year. Three years in Seville, southern Spain, a year in Greece, three years in Okinawa, Japan's semi-tropical Pacific island where edited weekly paper, Japan Update. Short stints in Syria and Libya, two more years near London and three months in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. In March 2007 came back to live in Japan for a second time.
