I've been living in South Africa for the past two years working on literacy initiatives. I started out by developing a writing program for township youth in Cape Town, and then worked on the BTA/Anglo Platinum national short story competition from Johannesburg. My most challenging project so far: assistant editing a book of essays by South African women for the Department of Arts and Culture, 100 essays spanning over a century in 6 languages. Currently, I'm working with the Malawi Writers Union to pioneer a short story competition for teenage girls with all of the prize money going to school fees.
