I'm fired up on:

All mountain and water sports; cold climates; deep wilderness; social and environmental issues; writing; composing; reading; watching favorite movies over and over; listening to old swings in New York at dawn while sipping a coffee; walking in Central Park in the heart of autumn; standing on top of a mountain; endless metaphysicophilosocial conversations; standing on a cliff facing a raging ocean on a cold, windy, stormy day; going where nobody goes; having a good laugh with good friends on a relaxed night; sleeping in a tent.

Tunes I rock out to:

I listen to virtually every kind of music, all depending on the situation. Right now I'm discovering The National and Ed Harcourt, also the Air B-Sides and remixes. I listen to Gershwin, Louis & Ella & Duke & Billie & Sinatra when I am in or miss New York.
In the fall I listen to Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Mahler's 8th, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade and Wagner's Tristan and Isolde and I start seeing fairies and dwarves and wizards.
Nothing better than a 60's/70's rock tune for the road; warm fun nights are for salsa and old reggaes; The Big Blue soundtrack is for mediteranean countries; Jamiroquai to get ready to go party; Blade Runner soundtrack or Massive Attack's Mezzanine or DJ Krush/Toshinori Kondo's Ki-Oku for bluesy nights... You get it.

Backpack, Adventure, discovery, hidden gems, effort, landscapes, solitude, authenticity, calm, nature, excitement, impulses.

I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when:

I traveled for a half-day on the top of a roofed pick-up truck with 23 Burkinabes in Burkina-Faso, then slept among them on the bare ground in the middle of nowhere after our car broke down.

I sang karaokes and got drunk with a group of Thai policemen in a lost bar in a lost town of the golden triangle.

I got invited to share a cup of tea with a couple of native Chileans in their shack-like home, perched on a dune of the wildest and most deserted beach I have ever seen, during the winter in Chiloe, Chile.

Ideal place to watch the sunrise:

At the bow of a sailboat.

Ideal place to watch the sunset:

Standing on one of the giant boulders of the Lavezzi Islands, between Corsica and Sardinia.
