INDONESIA BY FAR...Africa is a close 2nd and Mexico will always have my heart!! And, I'm sure the Central America trip will be epic--especially because I will see it all my from my little 14' solar trailer I left down in a small mountain village in Mexico.

Places I want to go to:

More of Asia, South America, Morocco, Ghana, Turkey, Yemen, hell...everywhere.

About me:

I'm usually on the road solo and travel very light; a solar backpack with a few changes of clothes is 'round about all I need. And one whisper of a fantastic off-grid meal will change my entire travel plan (as if there ever was one)~I also just got certified for Open Water Scuba Diving whilst in Indonesia, so I'm sure that will alter my future travel plans in a big way...
And, yah, this one just popped out of nowhere, I found my dream sailboat and bought the beast. Kinda puts a new spin on life here in the near future.
On the employment side of things, I'm what's known as a bit of a self-starter. I skipped college, moved to LA when I was 20 and shacked up at the YMCA in Hollywood---until I got my first job in the entertainment industry. I tend to get lucky (maybe because I've got the gift of gab) and I was a Line Producer/Production Manager before long on indie movies and TV shows---things like The Amazing Race, America's Next Top Model and a lovely year-long stint at Harpo (that was a doozie because I was able to work in Africa for months).

Last year, I sold an adventure show to the Travel Channel called "Craving Adventure" where I was the Director, Host, Writer and Producer (www.fatcakeproductions.com) and I've got another Pilates retreat that I'm producing coming up in January 2009 in Mexico (www.purepilatesretreat.com)---it's a sunshiney blissful mix of volunteering, cooking workshops and pilates.

I'm also a food and travel writer and tend to eat at hole-in-the-wall gems---the more ethnic the better. The biggest thing Im immersed in right now is 4th World Love, an NGO that I'm creating as we speak. Should be a fun ride--my blog (www.bigsweettooth.com) pretty much covers it all~

I'm fired up on:

Diving into Phase 3 of my NGO project in Indonesia (www.fourthworldlove.org), exploring more hidden pockets of the world, learning to speak more languages, helping remote villages see their true potential, mastering my Chung Hwa 36 sailboat, and volunteering in tiny hideaways round-the-world.

Travel style:

Alone. 1 Backpack. No plan.

Who I'd like to meet on my travels:

Smiling faces...everywhere, no matter the injustice and disaster....

I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when:

I'm teaching a group of very shy Muslim men how to wink and hug--American-style...whilst in a candle-lit living room somewhere in the mountains of Indonesia.

Why I travel:

To remember what I miss. To eat myself silly. To laugh 'til I cry. To breath in a nation. To witness true progress in a child's eyes when they learn a new English word. To forget all that I know.

From the top of Mt. Rinjani, Lombok, Indonesia

Hi,

I was reading one of your blog posts and you mentioned some places that let you stay for cheap when volunteering. Could you post these places if you can find the time, I plan on traveling through Latin and South America next summer and would love to know some places to volunteer and stay.

I read your article about driving Baja - it was great by the way - but I was wondering about women traveling solo? I'm pretty green at this traveling alone thing, so I'm still pretty cautious - any insight for me?

Well, I can only speak for myself but I have to say, I have NEVER had trouble traveling along...and I've been 'round the world.
Even in Baja...I felt safer there than almost anywhere.

Just have a bit of pluck about you and obviously don't wander around looking like a tourist. Keep your cool, you know?

Good idea, will do! Also if you check out my blog, there is a post up today about the little compound I am in here in Mexico with some photos. There is also a post that has a good photo of the solar panel. I cannot tell you how free I feel with this little trailer. Such an AMAZING way to travel---and to be able to go so off grid when I want. Truly the best.

So, my trailer is pretty dang cool. I'm in a little RV park in Mexico right now and have never been more connected.

When you say the word "Nicaragua"--it's so funny to see peoples reactions.
