In terms of places to live, you'd probably want to be in one of the inner suburbs - either north of the city in Fitzroy or Carlton, or south towards the bay in Port Melbourne, South Melbourne, Albert Park, Middle Park, St Kilda, Elwood, Prahran or Windsor. Depends how much action you're looking for, whether you're particularly keen on the beach etc. There are lots of places to hang out in all of the above, again depends on your interests.
