I've lived in Paris for three years and had been working as a tour guide in France for several years before that. I now organise and lead trips around both Paris, Loire Valley, Provence and other areas of France(and Europe).
Being both a local, and a guide lets me experience the best of both worlds - the must see sights and the 'local scence' that many visitors don't get to experience.

Too many to mention but some highlights: India, Nepal, Indonesia, New Zealand, West Coast USA and Alaska - all have stunning scenery.

About me:

Graduated in Journalism and International Relations from a UK university and spent most of my adult life travelling, working and volunteering abroad. Met my fiancée, Claire, on a trip around the US and moved to Paris in 2006 after completing a year’s round the world trip with her- just to make sure we’d get on alright together. I currently work as a tour guide, leading trips around Paris, France or the rest of Europe.

I want so bad to visit France! But many things stand in my way...I can speak nothing but english, I have never been to France and have been told they don't care for americans. I have no idea how to go about seeing everything alone. Are you still a guide and do you think I could see France without insulting the French?

Any way you can help would be wonderful and very much appreciated!

Hey Matt,

Thanks for the info...it's depressing/heartening to know you got a job by running into people at the airport! I am always on the lookout for whatever's next. I have become a master at the art of putting off grad school. Teaching jobs in Latin America are so low paid that I was thinking of starting to explore guiding...but that means I'd actually have to commit myself to sticking around one place for more than a year. Scary!

We'll see what happens--always an adventure. Keep in touch!

Hey Matt,

just added you to my network. How do you find guiding in France? I used to be a tour leader in Egypt, Jordan and (occasionally) Tunisia, so really enjoyed your article on the network about being a tour guide. I still sort of miss it, but did find it hard to put up with people when they were obnoxious! Plus, there's only so many times you can get up at 3 am to visit Abu Simbel temple ... again!

I had to laught at your comment about Abu Simbel. Doesn't matter how amazing something is, if you've seen it a million times!!!!! France is pretty good, the people can be annoying, but also amazing. In the end it's better than sitting in an office. Hope you're doing well.
