Hi Lynn,
I have spen the past year traveling through South Africa alone and it has been an amazing experience. I can def recommend some places you might enjoy. Driving has been good for me as it has given me the freedom to be where I want when I want and to find places off the beaten track.

Cape Town is a stunning city and a great place to start. I would travel from there, along the coast on the N2, though taking a detour on the R62 to check out mc gregor and robertson, and the amazing unique Karoo (try barrydale). The Garden Rote has many beautiful places to see - peace of eden is a lovely place to stay there - though a bit far from things, but perfect if you have a car.

The eastern cape and transkei wold be next also with many good spots - I was warned about traveling there as a woman alone - esp as u may have to nagivate some dirt roads not in the best condition - but it is worthwhile. Bulungula is a must - google it! Mdumbi is is a very beautiful, rustic place and port st johns is where all the backpackers head but its still a great place. I wouldnt bother with coffee bay unless you are into partying - it has lost its charm and beauty - too much tourism.

In Natal the Drakensberg mountain ranges are beautiful - i love it there - though hiking and nature are close to my heart. The midlands are also very lovely - on the way to the berg, and u will prob pass through durban.

Johanessburg is prob still one of the most dangerous cities, and there is not much of interest there for a tourist - so i would give it a miss unless u wanna travel up from there towards Cape town, which would also work or u feel set on seeing it as a cultural exp. Swaziland and Lesotho are both incredibly beautiful, more rural, places where u will get a true cultural experience! As is the Limpopo Valley. The Kruger National Park is the place to go for safaris and game viewing, and def worthwhile.

Get good maps, dont be afraid to ask for directions and take all the usual safety precautions. There are places in SA where safety or petty crime is an issue, you will get a sense of this as you travel - always good to ask the locals.

Enjoy ur trip
Regards
Ahrian
