About me:
I recall studying geography as a kid and thinking, "Wow! I can't wait to see that place." I actually thought I would get to meet the people in the textbook, too. Now that I'm a little more mature, meeting people - real people, not fictional characters - is the thing about travel that excites me most. Every person has a story, and I'm a good listener.

Midlothian, Virginia? What's the story of that name?
Welcome to Matador!

Funny, I never thought about it until you asked, but according to Wikipedia, Midlothian, "...was named for the early 18th century coal mining enterprises of the Wooldridge brothers who came from mining villages in East Lothian and West Lothian near Edinburgh, Scotland. In a compromise, the new venture was called Mid-Lothian. It produced the first commercially mined coal in the Virginia Colony and in what became the United States."

Thanks for the welcome!

We paid our driver, a good friend of my wife, an extra Uzbek SUM 5,000 to be sure to pick us up early enough so we would not be late to the Tashkent train station.  Anybody with a car in this city is a taxi driver, and Milka has a car. She's been driving us of the past week in her tiny...
