Hey man, I just got back from an amazing week on the Hoh and Elwha in The Olympics. Honestly life changing...check up on my blogs and pics while I'm gone and hopefully we can kick it when I return!

Do you have plans for your Olympic Mountains trip? I live about 3 minutes from Hurricane Ridge in Port Angeles. The mountains are a beautiful place- good choice for travel.

This 'country that seems boiling over and bursting at the seams with division and vision'-

I felt 'pensive' after reading that. In a good way. Pensive like when the song switches to a minor key. When everything seems more important somehow but not quite as funny. It's hard to be funny in a minor key.

Certain landscapes / terrains have always had that effect on me. The Badlands, for example, or the 4 corners region. The High Desert and mesa-lands that you're passing through right now.

You're in Ed Abbey country, now that I think of it. Ever read any Ed? A deeply neglected literary curmudgeon and hellman of the deep south transplanted to the canyonlands out west. When he was dying he had his friends break him out of the hospital and then, when he finally passed, bury him 'illegally' high up in some hidden canyon. Then they all ate roasted corn and drank beer.

It's early my friend. 6:50 a.m. Still into the first sips of coffee and thoughts not yet clear. Early for this country too, the one you describe as having 'seen civilization gather it wits and then go mad.'

Give it a few more thousand years and we might gather our wits again.

And it occurs to me now that that's part of the minor key thing as well that hits you out in the canyonlands. You can see those layers of rocks and cooled magma like a picture of 60 million years right and how the wind just keeps passing through sound all hollow and dry and serious. Here everything's clouded and filled in. Treed and mossy.

Actually looks like sunshine this morning though in the emerald city.

I think I may climb Mt. Adams while your road tripping, I was going to to see if Jaymie was game. I think we should do Mt. Baker in May, that way we can visit Bekah while she is still in school. Or Mt. Stuart/Lake Ingels, which Josie and Bridget could come along for part of it.

Mexico is amazing--just spent this week in Oaxaca, up in the mountains, interviewing indigenous weavers, candle makers, and revolutionaries, eating massive tortillas the size of a trashcan lid, and eating salsa de chorizo in an outdoor hut... the thought of which is making me hungry right now! ;)

Planning to travel to Viet Nam and Cambodia early next year. Really interested in Ha Long Bay and Angor Wat. Hope you don't mind if I pick your brain in the upcoming months.

I'm Vietnamese, born in U.S. and this will be first time visiting, so I'm super excited. Fluent in conversational Vietnamese, so crossing my fingers this will help.
