I'm fired up on:

Cunning life plans / especially daily ... having a delicious time, and setting my friends and students a good example in that direction.

Really enjoy being a non-speaker in a very different community ... keeps me in a state of wonder/ bewilderment.

Travel style:

Slow, easy, by myself usually, ... little enthusiasm for heroic big-bag travel. Look for easy ways to negotiate non-English speaking trains, hotels, etc.

I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when:

standing for much of 10 hours overnight on a crowded train near Beijing - to tell the truth, being old, and trying to read a book (highly regarded) got me a lot of shared seats/ perches/ - also looked after by student Chinese traveling companions. Next day was lost in sleep tho ... flying has advantages.
