About me:

A freelance writer since 1991, I write about things that make me say "wow!" It could be science or history or art or anything that strikes my fancy and I think other people should know about. Here on Matador I'm going to focus on "little museums", those odd, out of the way caches that reveal more about a place, a topic or a time and the people who made it memorable than even the locals know. I'm fired up on:

Research. History. Uncovering secrets or rediscovering forgotten treasures. It's taken me nearly 2 decades to realize that I should have been a Librarian, an archivist or a researcher. So now I am pursuing those academic certifications and seeking outlets for the fruits of my curiosity.
I am also fired up about Informed Ideas (InformedIdeas.ning.com), a social network and LinkedIN Group for all types of professional writers around the globe that i founded in March 2008.

Everything by Jimmy Buffet, Dean Martin or Billy Joel. Music that tells a story.

Travel style:

I normally travel with groups but with independent explorations. I travel alone as well, as long as I have an established itinerary so that people know when and where I should be for safety purposes. I prefer local flavor and history to mass marketed destinations. I'm not afraid to camp although I prefer to sail and won't turn down the occasional pampering/VIP treatment.

I want to make a difference by:

Restoring wonder to the world. There are so many amazing things to do and see and experience and learn about if people would only get out of their all inclusive resorts and ethnocentric attitudes. At the very least, I would like to put "modern" culture in context.

Languages spoken, other than English:

Spanish (Castillian), Italian, French, German

I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when:

Attending university in Spain. I still think of it as "my" country, although I no longer live there. I hope someday to return there permanently.

Why I travel:

To understand myself and the world around me. For the joy of it, because it is fun!

Ideal place to watch the sunrise:

On a deserted beach after a stormy night anywhere in the world.

Shattuck-St. Mary's Schools in Faribault, Minnesota.

Before I die I'd like to:

Dive with great white sharks, sail transatlantic, visit Vatican City, sail the Caribbean on a tall ship, see the pyramids and way too many more to list!

Preparing for a Water Fix

I live in a desert and I love it. But once a year my misspent youth in Southern Florida fights its way to the front of my mind and demands a water fix. Not just any water will do. I need serious water. Only an ocean or inland sea (like the Great Lakes) will do.
