Heyy Gypsy...

Nice blogs. I was in Calcutta last year (you still call it Calcutta, nice :-) and plan to write a small piece on the street food.... I couldn stay for very long so probably ended up missing quite a lot. Plan to come there later this year to see what I missed. btw do you know that place where we get doodh thumbs-up????

Wow--I'm almost exactly the same: history major focused on sociology, interest in literature (I love reading good books, and I write fiction), and of course, travel. ;) What do write, other than pieces like your Pink Chaddi article? Any fiction? I'd be interested if you did. Your English is fantastic, by the way, a significantly better sense of style than a good many of my friends who've been speaking it all their lives.

Hey! Thanks for the comment on the kitty, it crawled up my lap in Goa and wouldn't leave! I'm allergic to cats too but I just couldn't put it down, we named her Bandit.
...it got eaten by dogs a couple days later...

After the UK, down along the Mediterranean through France, Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, then Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, back up through Turkey, then Georgia, Ukraine, and whatever gets me from there back to Frankfurt, which is where I fly back from in August. Should be fun :)

I've always wanted to go to India though. If there was one piece of literature that you really thought depicted living/traveling there well, what would it be?

I agree! There's plenty more I want to see and do there, including the Ellora Caves, Goa/Kerala, Sikkim/Darjeeling (a must!), the list goes on!!! Be well.

Yes! We spent 2 months there last year. It was challenging but amazing (as I'm sure you know). About 10 days in Delhi (in and out as a home base), three weeks touring Himachal Pradesh and Punjab; a few days in Varanasi, 8 days in Bodh Gaya, Agra, and two weeks in Rajasthan.

What are your thoughts?

Hi Gypsy,

Nice to meet you! Have you read The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai? I'm in the middle of it, and it's a wonderful book set in the Darjeeling area. A novel about Indians and Nepalis trying to get along in that area. Fictional but with some historical insights.
