About me:

Philosophy #1: I believe we should allow ourselves the freedom to be surprised and amazed by whatever beauty, irony, tragedy, or humor each new day brings. We should allow our senses to experience these things with a childlike wonder and curiosity, and we should let the daily newness profoundly and constantly change us.

Philosophy #2: I’ve traveled the world writing about and photographing its many faces from the motorbike-filled streets of Viet Nam to the townships of South Africa, but in the end, my roots always bring me back to the deep, black Midwestern earth where I was raised, reinforcing a belief that the most meaningful art is nestled in the place one calls home.

It is my hope that these two values resonate in my work long after the ink fades.

People who enjoy a civil debate occasionally, a good beer or wine more than occasionally, and a loud laugh or ponderous look at the stars whenever possible.

I want to make a difference by:

treading lightly on the earth, being open-minded, preserving stories so we never forget.

Spanish (beginner)

I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when:

traveling solo through Vietnam. It was intensely emotional and lonely, but I survived and learned a lot about the culture and myself that I never could have discovered otherwise.

Why I travel:

I travel to get beyond myself, to see the bigger picture and find ways to offer hope for the future.

Ideal place to watch the sunrise:

Waking up at 4am to hike up to a cliff to eat breakfast and watch the sunrise

Ideal place to watch the sunset:

Anyplace where there's a friend to lean against and be quietly present.

Before I die I'd like to:

Learn to play the harmonica, meet a cannibal, 50 countries before I turn 50, touch the South Pole, get published in National Geographic, adopt, become fluent in another language, cross the Sahara (preferably on a camel), take a motorcycle road trip, dogsled, learn to ballroom dance
