About me:
Although I've always been a writer, my background is in outdoor education. Six years ago I moved away from teaching to pursue writing professionally, and began freelancing for local Colorado newspapers, alternative weeklies, and regional magazines.
As a way of supplementing my income as well as learning something new I began an apprenticeship in carpentry. I believe that building things--or just doing simple work with your hands--teaches you how to write. But then you could say that for just about anything--running rivers, showing kids how to build a fire, or just listening to music.
In 2007 Ross Borden and Ben Polansky brought me on as Editor of Matador.
It has been an incredible honor and a privilege to work with so many passionate people from around the world and I look forward to watching our community continue to unfold.
Hey David! I hope you and your family have a fantastic weekend. Just so you know I'll be in San Francisco all of next week for a technical conference. If there's anything you need though, just let me know. I'm always happy to help out at Matador!

Very inspiring story on how to recreate oneself and start on a new journey. One never knows where those initial first steps might lead. Congratulations to you.
Heading out to the Everglades, I hope. I have to go to Miami for work; Salt Lake City and Michigan too. My day job is for the Rainforest Alliance, and so I audit companies for conformance to the Forest Stewardship Council standards. Gets me out and about quite a bit!
I just read an article in the New Yorker about escaped pythons in the 'Glades; maybe I'll see one! Cheers!
1. Our last night here. All the furniture is gone. Any sound--like the
scraping of my spoon against the side of the cereal bowl--reverberates
throughout the empty rooms. Layla and Lau are in bed in the
stripped-bare bedroom. Layla sleeps. Lau reads Anna Karenina. We have
to leave here at 5 am...
1. Here in the Green Lake library with a funk / brazil remix by Swiss dj Tschuegge J Buchs in the headphones. It's ok for working. Would sound better pumping through big house speakers and everyone dancing outside. There's finally sun here and people would move if you could get it loud enough.
1. Yesterday it rained all day. It was like the 230th day of rain or something. After it rains a lot and neither of us has had enough sleep we usually start fighting.
2. At one point during the fight I was fighting in a whisper so as not to wake up Baby Layla. I was also looking for a pair of socks so...
