Madrid, Krueger National Park (South Africa), Benguela, Lubango (Angola), New York City, London, and Luanda. There really is no place like home.

Places I want to go to:

I will intern abroad in Buenos Aires starting in May 09. During my time there I plan to visit as much of Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina as possible.

About me:

I was born in Luanda, Angola, and raised in a small town in Portugal called Peniche, a boarding school in Pangbourne, England and a town close to DC called Alexandria. I'm used to being 'that new kid' so I find it easy and enjoyable to make friends. Or maybe it is because I hail from a large, boisterous family, which I can't get enough of. I really like to cook, and I might be mildly addicted to both orange and passion fruit juices.

I'm fired up on:

Discovering new music, playing soccer, drinking caipirinhas in front of the ocean while watching the waves, reading something that changes the way I view things or at least makes me question them, watching a film that does the same, cooking for my friends/family, reading about politics and governance (especially of the African variety), and reading the news, since I'm a sort of a news junkie.

Tunes I rock out to:

Oh man. The list is extensive. Tunes by Federico Aubele, Kevin Johansen, Manu Chao, Amadou & Mariam, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Bob Marley, Bebel Gilberto, Madredeus, Seu Jorge, Mundo Livre S/A, Coralie Clement, Sara Tavares, Zuco 103, Mayra Andrade, Paulo Flores, Common, Lauryn Hill, Nina Simone, MGMT, Red Hot CHilli Peppers, Sigur Ros, Mum, Thievery Corporation, etc, etc, and so forth...this was always a dangerous question to ask me. But my favorite tune to listen to while traveling/packing/flying is New Slang by The Shins. I can't really explain why.

Travel style:

Before I go anywhere I try to get a feel for the soul of the place...when I arrive I get the slight twinge of familiarity. Robert Louis Stevenson said "There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler that is foreign." I really believe that. I like to travel with a small group of friends or my cousins, who are all open to new experiences and are ok with not having a set itinerary. I relish the unexpected and I thoroughly enjoy the unplanned. When visiting a new place, I seek out the places that are off the beaten path, the places that are authentic and offer a real representation of a different way of life. At the same time, I am not afraid of the guidebook. It doesn't matter how I get there - plane, car, ferry, foot - what I want is the adventure!

I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when:

I was put on a boarding school in England before ever having lived away from my parents and extended family. But this might be surpassed by my coming adventures in South America...!

Why I travel:

I really believe that it is the best way to spend my time while alive. Some find that calling in religion, I found it in traveling. I feel like the world is there for us to explore it. Nothing is as beautiful to me as the human condition - realizing we are all PEOPLE, with hopes and anguishes and dreams and loves, is a lesson that many fail to grasp.

Hi Claudio,

thanks for the reply to my comment about your article "5 Reasons to Go To Angola 2009". I would really be interested in the list of affordable places in Luanda (and maybe other places in Angola?). Please keep me posted.
