I don't feel like i've been on vacation unless i get to go somewhere that is completely unlike home. I'm more interested in villages than cities, more into buses than planes, prefer down and dirty cultural experiences to photo ops.

I want to make a difference by:

being the most conscious, courteous, humble traveler i can possibly be...and soaking up what i'm shown like a sponge.

some spanish, a tiny smattering of Japanese

I felt the most immersed in a foreign culture when:

i've wandered into a local bar or restaurant, the only foreigner in the place, the only person that speaks english, and get to play the "please feed me" game.

Why I travel:

right, like i have a choice in the matter.

Ideal place to watch the sunrise:

on a felucca floating lazily up the nile

Ideal place to watch the sunset:

the desert

Before I die I'd like to:

see more, hear more, taste more, smell more, feel more

Oh wow - you're way out there, huh! I lived in central hokkaido. The hiking is spectacular - Daisetsuzan, Shiretoko, or one of the lesser known hikes, like Kogane-dake, Uryu-numa...or Yotei-zan.

Hey, which prefecture is your island part of? I was a JET in Hokkaido for 2 years...still miss parts of the life there.

I'm technically part of Tokyo prefecture, but it's about a 300 km trip to the mainland. I really want to get up to Hokkaido before I leave. Any recommendations? Are you still in Japan?
