About me:
Since graduating university, I've been working as an English teacher in various places abroad, with some travels in between jobs. I have taught in Thailand and England (teaching international students; the Brits already know English), and am now in South Korea. I know a lot of people enter this line of work as a means to travel, but I find it very gratifying and have learned a lot about local cultures by communicating with students.

I'm currently torn on taking a trip to North Korea.

I love writing creative pieces as well as travel stories and personal essays. I have been writing for the Thailand-based tourism site www.khaosanroad.com, and a new zine called Alternative Scope (http://alternativescope.blogspot.com).

Anne,

How long are you in Korea?

Ottawa is going alright. I love this place in the summer, but the winters get to me after a month or two. the snow is beautiful and the skiing has been fabulous this year, but I miss the warmth and the daylight. Went to Brazil last February, so maybe that's why this winter seems particularly daunting.

It's so nice to be close to family and old friends for the time being though. we are all spreading out over the world so it's hard to say when the next time will be.

Looking forward to the move that's for sure.

(also looking forward to reading your blogs:)

take care!

Hi Anne,

Long time, glad to reconnect!

I can't believe you pet a tiger!
I pet a chickadee that landed on my hand while cross country skiing last weekend, but a tiger...now that takes a bit more guts!!

I am impressed.

Something Yellow This Way Comes

For weeks, my Korean friends had been warning me about yellow dust season.

"Do you have a face mask?" they ask, wielding their own surgeon's masks in Hello Kitty and Louis Vuitton prints. "Do you have a jacket to wear? And glasses?" They cringe as they speak. "The dust...

As a traveler, I love taking photographs. While scenery and landscapes are well and gorgeous, my favourite pictures are shots of local people in everyday activities. To me, these photos are intimately telling of a culture; an old woman selling live eels in a market; men playing checkers in a shaded...

Anyone who goes overseas for long periods of time runs the risk of waking up in their exotic surroundings and finding themselves (gasp!) bored. It's a guilty feeling, to be bored abroad. You assume you're being idle, and not taking full advantage of your circumstances. But to live and work and set up...
