About me:
Since graduating university, I've been working as an English teacher in various places abroad, with some travels in between jobs. I have taught in Thailand, England, and South Korea. I know a lot of people enter this line of work as a means to travel, but I find it very gratifying and have learned a lot about local cultures by communicating with students.

I'm sneaking in some North American travels before starting a TESL diploma course in the winter.
I love writing creative pieces as well as travel stories and personal essays. I have been writing for the Thailand-based tourism site www.khaosanroad.com, and a new zine called Alternative Scope (http://alternativescope.blogspot.com).

I'm now in Istanbul, Turkey, teaching and exploring.

Anne,

How long are you in Korea?

Ottawa is going alright. I love this place in the summer, but the winters get to me after a month or two. the snow is beautiful and the skiing has been fabulous this year, but I miss the warmth and the daylight. Went to Brazil last February, so maybe that's why this winter seems particularly daunting.

It's so nice to be close to family and old friends for the time being though. we are all spreading out over the world so it's hard to say when the next time will be.

Looking forward to the move that's for sure.

(also looking forward to reading your blogs:)

take care!
B

Hi Anne,

Long time, glad to reconnect!

I can't believe you pet a tiger!
I pet a chickadee that landed on my hand while cross country skiing last weekend, but a tiger...now that takes a bit more guts!!

I am impressed.

Back in Canada, as I was packing for Turkey, I fretted about clothes day and night. I scoured travel books, travel blogs, photo after photo online, trying to figure out typical (non-offensive) dress in this part of the world. I was headed to Istanbul, a place that most of my resources described as...

Today I discussed the notion of culture shock with my ESL students. "Have you ever experienced this feeling?" I asked. After all, many had traveled before. They were cosmopolitan Istanbullians through and through, and most have described other parts of Turkey as being radically different from their urban,...

I met a new type of traveler, on a recent trip to Jamaica. They're not quite tourists and they're not quite expats, and while they may seem to belong in the same camp as retired Florida-bound snowbirds, they are certainly not.

While they all had different stories, their relationships with the country...
