Write, Write, Write!
|
Guys love my husband. You see, my husband Marc is a sportswriter. This means he watches games, talks with celebrity athletes on a daily basis, and writes about what he experiences. For many fellas, this is a dream job. You can almost see them drool as they ask him questions like, "What's Manny really like?" or "Is Jeter as nice as he seems?" I don't care about watching sports each day, and I certainly don't get excited about famous sports figures. But I envy my husband for two things. First, he travels lots. He works hard, and sometimes the 4 AM wake-up calls and jet lag are grueling. But he sees so much! While I have never set foot in Los Angeles, he could give me a week's worth of dinner recommendations, a ranked list of preferred hotels, and tell me three different routes to drive to Dodger Stadium. Each phone call or email I hear about a new microbrew he tried, or he sends me pictures from the top of a famed skyscraper. While I'm thrilled for him, it makes a travel addict boil with jealousy. I also envy the time he has to write each day. He is paid for it, but not nearly what he deserves. He has to come up with story ideas, do research, interviews, and then actually write the thing. Nevertheless, I would relish a career that would allow me to sit, work and rework sentences until I was able to say just exactly what I wished to say. As a music teacher I rarely get a minute to use the bathroom, much less sit in a quiet room and reflect on travels and the world around me. I have a few friends who have felt the same way...they desperately need to write, but just can't find the time, so they courageously quit their jobs in order to devote themselves to their passion. I am not quite ready (financially or otherwise) to give up my teaching to risk it all. But I am certain that my writing will not improve if I don't, well, WRITE! So here goes. I have a place to work, now, so the next step is making the time. |
