Traveling around the world with your laptop: not as tricky as you'd think
|
In our six week sprint around the world back in June, I opted to take my MacBook. I anticipated the paranoia this might inspire on the many trains, buses and hostels we'd encounter but I figured it couldn't be any worse than taking my video camera to Kenya which passed without incident. I got a sleek case for my little Mac-Beezy that would fit inside a day pack and an extra battery for the legs where I'd be away from a power supply. Traveling with an I-pod, headphones, digital camera and a laptop feels like a lot of electronics but as long as you bag up and organize all the chargers in ziplocks, everything you need to watch like a hawk is in one backpack. If you're a passionate writer or you work from the road, I'd highly recommend trying travel with a laptop--even third world. Every Internet cafe you can either plug in or jump on their network and for the downtime in airports, train rides etc, it's money to be able to get some solid work done on Word, to publish later. |

I enjoyed your post. I also travel with my MacBook and iPod. My travels have so far been to Canadian Arctic regions. The conditions have been rugged and my new Lululemon Cruiser Backpack has kept everything safe. The pack has waterproof fabric with compartments for everything, clearly labeled with rubber icons, for my Palm Treo, iPod, MacBook, digital camera, chargers, etc. I'm doing a review on my blog today.

I couldn't agree more Ross - my laptop held up fine throughout my Cambodian coast expedition. btw - where was that shot of phi phi taken? did you stay at phi phi hill? looks like the restaurant view...
it was actually taken from this place called, "the tree house" on phi phi don. i've been meaning to write a rec' blog on it because the place is super tranquilo and has the best banana shakes in town.
Thanks for this post. I`d always been weary about travelling with one - more an issue of extra weight/too many gadgets than safety.
Will take one on the next go-around.
