Peaceful Isolation in California PART 1: Echo Lake and Desolation Wilderness
|
Echo Lake is accessible through a small, well hidden road right off of CA Hwy 50, about 15 minutes from South Lake Tahoe. That the lake is so hard to find, probably has a lot to do with the fact that it's still so quiet, clean and beautiful. Other than the main road coming in, there are no streets at Echo. You drive in and park and to get to the cabins on the lake, you must take a boat. Echo is a glacier lake. It's deep and cold and very calm most of the time. Steep polished granite mountains rise up on either side of the lake. As you can see on the map, there are actually two separate lakes, upper and lower. The trout fishing is good on both and the bottom is ideal for water skiing and wakeboarding. On a good morning/evening, the entire lake is glass. The other dope thing about Echo is that it's one of the gateways to Desolation Wilderness. "Desolation" as it's commonly referred to, is a harsh, rocky landscape that resembles the moon, except that it has vast lakes and it's dotted with old, twisted trees that have seen high winds and hard winters. NOTE: the name on the map says "lily Lake" and that is wrong. That is Echo Lake. Larry and Sergey got something wrong? Scary... |
