There is, apparently, an absurd amount of law enforcement in this town. We have the Aroostook County Sheriff's Department, the Houlton Police Department, the State Police barracks are here, we have the Customs and Border Patrol, and most recently, I noticed a Maliseet Tribal Police vehicle (the Maliseets are a Native American/First Nation tribe from the St. John river valley area in New Brunswick, Maine, and Quebec; they belong to the Wabanaki Confederacy, and are probably the biggest minority in the town). Not that I have any grudges against the police - it just seems like a bit much for town with a population just over 6,000. I will say that all the various police vehicles do add to my driving paranoia. Oh yeah, recently a family member was telling me this story about "Dan" - one of the, uh, more colorful local characters (although, really, this town seems to be nothing but colorful characters). Way back (like the 70s), Dan grew tired of forever being pulled over by the police, so he spray painted "HPD" on the side of this own rusty P.O.S. |
