Great Travel Journaling Tip
|
Man, I haven't blogged in a million years. Anyway, I heard a great tip for journaling on the road. My journal is pretty personal, so often rather than travel notes or anecdotes, it diverts into introspective rants. A few different people recommended letter writing; this way, your writing is aimed towards someone with anecdotes, humor, and details - not just personal impressions that will be meaningless later on. This could work in a variety of ways - actually writing letters, making copies, and sending them, or writing letters with someone in mind but not sending them, or one woman I spoke to actually kept a journal while traveling in Indiana for her husband to read when he returned home. I've decided I'm going to keep my journal as is, but each entry will be a mini-letter addressed to someone - as a kind of way to remind me to actually write (rather than rant). In a sense, this goes against everything I've been taught in writing classes: eliminate your inner-censor, write from your gut, write from the third chakra... But all that new agey, free writing type stuff never got me anywhere. The letter writing idea is so simple, and yet I'd never thought of it in just those terms. |
