Need fresh eyes?

I just saw the most incredible and heartbreaking film, "God Grew Tired of Us", a brilliant documentary about the Lost Boys of Sudan's decades-long civil war. If youre in need for a little change of perspective (i know ive been rather mopey), this will wake you up.

Among others, it won the Audience Award at sundance last year, and rightfully so. Though im certainly a sucker for these kinds of films anyway, its been a while since ive been so thoroughly engaged. It's emotional but not sentimental and very well edited.

National Geographic producer, Christopher Quinn, follows the process of resettlement of three Lost Boys to various US cities, after over ten years of scarce survival in forced exile from Sudan and at the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, home to their surrogate families. Most of these men lost their entire families when they were only young boys and were witness to some of the most gruesome human atrocities imaginable. While in the US, at times they are overwhelmed w/the deepest feelings of loneliness and angst. Yet, their story is possibly the greatest example of the resilience of the human spirit and of persistent love and hope. It brings me to wonder what my own capacity would be, not only for suffering, but also for true love and faith, if ever really put to that test.

Premieres in San Francisco at the Lumiere Theatre on Jan 19.
