My graduate adviser keeps a post card collection, which he recently shared with me. What you see here is a post card from the Food Stuffs International, Inc.Visitor Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.. This smiling older lady is sitting behind her welcome desk, a giant distorted globe ringed with ketchup and mayonnaise jars blooming out of her head, as if to say, “Yes, folks, the world of condiments did indeed spring fully formed from your grandmother’s brain.” But though it might explain the origin of condiments, this image generates a lot more questions than it answers. For example, why on earth would Food Stuffs International, Inc. have a visitor center? Who visits it? Why is there no real food anywhere in this picture? Why did this company choose to make the worst composed photograph on earth into a post card? I welcome any answers to these questions as well as any alternate interpretations of this truly disturbing image. I'll be sharing more of these strange postcards over the coming weeks. |

What I find somewhat surprising is that South America hasn't been "disappeared" and North America (ahem, the U.S.) hasn't been dropped into the strangely shaped globe. What's the year in which the postcard was made?
Oops- mean to say that I was surprised the US hasn't been made the center of the world.
