Tell me where to go.
|
I'm packing my bags and flying away in less than a month and STILL have no idea where I'll land. Mexico or the Southern Cone? Or somewhere else entirely? I surveyed my family over Thanksgiving in hopes that a definitive answer could come forth: Mom cast her vote for Argentina, only because the Libby's are predisposed to love it. Dad questioned me for questioning him. Brother said he didn't feel comfortable giving advice. Sister gave an altogether vague response. Grandma thinks I should buckle down and stuff my mattress. And me? I considered burying my small treasure but thought this economic slowdown could be the opportune time for a good old fashioned personal investment. Here's the nitty-gritty: I'd love advice on the best all around spot for seeing some cool sites while also busting my ass in the Spanish language scene - all on a budget, of course. Tell me where to go! PS. Should anyone be interested in popping in on the winning route, I'd be more than happy to see your real faces sometime between January-April in the year of our Lord 2009. |

Chile AND Uruguay would be ideal! ;) I have a hrad time making choices, too.
But seriously, Chile is just flat out beautiful, and if you're looking for a way to save some money and stay in a place for a little while, that's a great place. Plus, I'll be writing lots of articles about Chile in January to give some insider info. ;)
My wife and I are headed to Bolivia in January and are quite jazzed up about it. Might not be the best place for Spanish learning, though, seeing as how over half the population speaks something else as their first language. But if you pass through Cochabamba, give us a shout!
Right on. Bolivia! I'll probably steer clear of it this go round (had a wild time in the west - try to check out Potosi and the Salar while you're there), but I'm jealous you'll be visiting COCHABAMBA (on my destination wish list)! Not sure if this will interest you, but here's a nice, comprehensive website/blog from an organization concerned with Bolivian politics, etc. I think they're based in Cochabamba.

Thanks for good word. And good luck in your travels!
You're heading off soon! So excited for you!
Never having been south of Acapulco I don't have any advice to offer from personal experience... but Tim sure made Uruguay sound great last year, and Ross and Julie's trip to Chile looked amazing!
That being said, I know there's a ton of Spanish language schools in Guatemala (or are you just looking for immersion?), and with Central American being so much more compact you might be able to take your time more and still see a ton.
Either way, can't wait to hear all about it~~
You're right. Tim, Ross and Julie have produced some excellent Southern Cone blogs. I'm beginning to lean in that direction.. although oddly, I'm feeling really guilty about it. Shouldn't I visit my closest neighbor first??
We'll see!!
I vote for Uruguay (or flying into BA and then taking a boat across the river). The people are great after they open up, the food (I am a lover of empanadas and now chivitos) fabulous, and I have only seen a sliver of the country (Montevideo and one town outside of the city, Atlantida). There are heaps of places on the coast I hear...everyone speaks of Punta del Diablo, and it is on the way to Brazil as well.
I am keeping a blog on my Montevideo times to explain more. I think it is on my user profile? Here for any questions...
Ciao,
D
ha. Just read some of your blogs: Seven empanadas in one day, eh? That's incredible.
Definitely on the list of positives for Uruguay. Thanks!!
