Fear of losing it all.
|
I know most of you have traveled with everything you own on your back. With that there is always the fear that it could go missing. We have all come back from a trip and notice that some item is missing. Usually it is something small, never do you come back and your home has gone missing. Well for me, my home is a boat and there is always the chance you can come back to nothing. Just two days ago i stayed at a friends house instead of my boat, to many drinks to make it back there. The weather was perfect that night no breeze and a mild current. I got up the next day did my normal routines, and prepared to head back to my boat. While motoring thru the harbor, i was looking ahead, and noticed something looked strange. It took a few minutes for me to realize what was out of place, my boat was gone. When ever you lose something important your heart rate jumps a little, just think how i felt noticing my home was gone. After letting the shock go down a little i started looking around to see if i noticed my boat somewhere. A few moments later i see what looks like my boat about half a mile out. While getting closer i can tell it is my boat, but how did it get over there? Did someone try to steal it, or did it just break free? Those where the questions on my mind. Upon arriving on the boat i noticed the saftey anchor had been moved to a different spot and the boat was tied up. Nobody had gone inside and nothing was missing. What the hell happened? That's the only thing i kept thinking. After returning to shore and talking to some other boaters i finally found out what happened. Around 2am my neighbors noticed the boat floating off the island next to us. They jumped in their boat and grabbed on to my lines to tow it back. The hook up for my anchor was gone so they moved it to another location. The boat has been tied up to the same spot for over four years. It has gone thru 3 hurricanes and countless storms. When living on a boat you know the chance of losing it during a storm is high, but losing it on a calm night you don't expect. All it took was a single pin to work itself loose for everything in my life to float away. The same common bond that us fellow travelers have, is the same in the boating community. Everybody looks out for eachother. I will always be thankful to my neighbors for saving my home. |

wow. close call. i'm glad you still have your boat!
Nothing beats a sense of community and belonging.
