The Story So Far
|
Days: 4 Cities: Atlanta GA, Charleston SC Confederate flags spotted: 2, not counting the zillions in souvenir shops in downtown Charleston Bumper sticker of the moment: “Got Jesus?” Favorite cheesy Charleston pirate souvenir magnet: “Work is for people who don’t know how to plunder.” New foods tried: 5 (sweet tea, grits, squash soufflé, collard greens, crab cakes) Local microbrews sampled: 2 Interviews conducted: 1, with a South Carolina Stingrays player selected entirely for his good looks. Turns out he was remarkably articulate and thoughtful - whoever said ulterior motives are a bad thing? References to Obama being assassinated upon election: 2, one overheard on King Street in Charleston (“If Obama gets the nomination, they’re gonna kill him. If Hillary gets the nomination, they’re gonna kill her.") and one from a homeless man in Auburn (“Them white folks ain’t gonna let the White House become no Black House.”) Strange coincidences: 2, a Carter Center intern who did African history at Dal two years behind me, and a South Carolina Stingrays player who knows my ex-boyfriend’s Dad Enjoyment factor so far: 9/10 (Would be 10/10 if it hadn’t been for that ugly highway incident yesterday – is it rude to deduct only one point considering a man’s life was on the line? Maybe let’s call it 8.5/10…) |

Great list Eva, keep them coming!
***GASP!*** You skipped Savannah?! Entirely? Not even a passing-through-stop-for-a-mint-julep-and-a-dose-of-old-southern-living kind of stop? We're my paragraphs of recommendations for naught?!
Oh well, I guess Savannah's charm is rather subjective. :) Good luck on the road ahead!
Hey JB, I haven't actually made it as far south as Savannah yet! I'm hoping to fit it in on my way back up from Florida... we'll see. This business of following minor league hockey teams around is really dominating my schedule. I just hope I sell the story to somebody after all this effort. :P
hurrah!
Glad your trip is living up to your expectations so far! And regarding the accident- yikes! I've witnessed the aftermath of some pretty bad accidents around here lately, including 2 on the Bay Bridge, but that one sounded pretty terrifying. Looking forward to more updates :)
So glad you added crab cakes to the list! I hope another big cup of sweet tea accompanied it. How is the not-so-hostile hostel?
Actually, since Charleston was so walkable, I seized the opportunity to have a beer with my crab cakes! The hostel was great, not hostile in the least. I'd definitely recommend it.
Love this! Ah... the South!
8.5 out of 10 and the only deduction was the motorcycle accident? Glad you're having a good time, Eva. My favorite sign encountered during a road trip from D.C to Louisiana was "Not Enough Exposure To The Son Will Cause You To Burn".
Stay safe, keep us posted, and leave some room in your enjoyment factor ratings for further encounters with minor league baseball players.
