the price of progress
|
the commercial fishing industry in Key West used to be based right downtown, with a working waterfront supporting all the shops, bars, and restaurants that thrived on the tourist trade. now fancy marinas, hotels, and resorts dominate the waterfront of downtown Key West, and the commercial fleet has been pushed over the bridge to Stock Island. i beat the docks the other day to find a site and gather the word on the street. the price for lobster is quite high for the fishermen, but no one can seem to find them in any abundance. guys are sweating. hurricane Wilma blew through two years ago and devastated the island. people with meager means were forced to leave, and people with medium means, including a lot of fishermen, are just hanging on. and the conglomerates are hot on their tail. Stock Island is rapidly moving towards resort community status, and a lot of the commercial guys fear being squeezed out altogether. i'm hoping to go fishing soon and find out the real deal from the boys in the trenches. "progress" isn't so progressive for a lot of people. other than that, the place is fantastic. |
