Malaria risk in Belize?
|
So we had a little mishap with our malaria meds. We got doxycycline perscribed because Dave had a bad experience with Malarone in Mozambique (i.e. he actually got malaria and blacked out for three days). We leave tonight, so we took our first pill yesterday....and noticed the small text on the side saying avoid contact with the sun. We're going to the Carribean. We don't have time to get another prescription so here are our choices: take the pills and either get badly sunburned and blistery or spend the Carribean vacation inside; don't take the pills and possibly get Malaria. Being that the risk of Malaria seems to be low in the areas we're going (Caye Caulker, Placencia, San Ignacio), and we have insect repellent that is 40% DEET, I think we're going to do the latter and skip the pills. The risk of ruining our vacation seems better than the definite damage to our good times the pills would cause. Anyone else have any experience in Belize? Should I even be concerned about this? Thanks! |
