Bangkok highlight: Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha

There are so many “Wat”’s here in Bangkok that it’ll make your head spin. A good one to start with though, is Wat Phra Kaew & Grand Palace—perhaps the most famous and well-known temple in the entire city.

I would suggest taking the public riverboat (an experience in itself), or a hired “longtail” boat (600 B, or around 15 USD), to Grand Palace. There, just off the docks, you’ll find a small market with unbelievable dishes for 2 USD and tons of trinkets and cheap hats and shirts if you need any gear. The food was amazing here and the market is just a couple steps from the temple gates.

NOTE: The temple closes at 3:30 everyday, so make sure you don’t get there late. Also, there is a dress code at all temples in Thailand. It is considered disrespectful to wear shorts or open toed shoes inside the temple, so dress accordingly. Women should wear skirts and men should wear long pants. No flops…

While in the temple, you should also be sure not to point your feet towards the Emerald Buddha—a highly offensive gesture in Thailand.

The place is amazing though and well worth checking out…
