Spicing it up in Stockholm
|
Chilli. Red. White. Black. Cayenne. Paprika. Bell. Habanero. You get the drift. These are the condiments I grew up on: sprinkling pepper on everything from eggs to beans just for the heck of it. The last week has been a culinary meltdown of sorts. Cool cucumbers on every sandwich. Lox in abundance. Blueberry soup you drink lukewarm. Liquid oatmeal you drink from a cup. Yes. In this world, Lingonberry is the condiment of choice. Sprinkled on everything from potatoes to meatballs. Sure I could sprinkle pepper if I wanted to, but on lox? There had to be something out there. Something with the right kick and tang that could very well become my condiment of choice here in Sweden. And I found it! I found it on a bitter cold Sunday afternoon when half of Stockholm's population was packed into the neighborhood Ikea just for the heck of it. Doused on lox, it was yellow and dilly and mustardy and just plain yummy. I found Gravlaxsås. Hmm. I wonder if Gravlaxsås goes well on rice and beans...... |

Ha! Reminds me of living in Uganda, land of the spice-less... A friend gave me a jar of Cajun spice before I left, and I swear I put that stuff on EVERYTHING. Guess it just takes something of a "flexible palate," huh? :)
Thanks - I've been writing food all afternoon but your post did me in. Now I'm hungry for whatever Gravlaxsas is ...and not likely to find it tonight.
So, what is it? Do you have a picture?
Julia, not-so-secretly addicted to food
Hey Julia. Its a very tangy yet sweet dill mustard that is excellent with seafood. Its the little jar in the picture.
