Letter from Arabia
|
A friend of mine emailed me and asked “So what do kids wear in Arabia”. I found this question to be quite ludicrous. It was as if Arabia was on a different planet, where you had to wear strange attire. I thought for a while weather I should tell her the truth or make up a “crap pot story” for the fun of it. Eventually I told her the truth. Everyone gets carried away with the long black gowns over publicized by western media; like the way the sex lives of Hollywood stars are over pusblicized. I’m speaking from experience, when I came hear I bought three suit cases of long dress which I never wear excepting in my house when I’m pregnant. I had to go out and redo my wardrobe. Beneath the yards of black linen women wear western garment, whether jeans and jersey, spaghetti strap tops, tank tops and some even wear their nightgown (I’m not pulling your legs.); excepting for the Bedouins, all modern Saudi women and children dress modern. At every corner there are clothes store selling every conceivable fashion, not necessarily popular brand names like the West, but the latest fashion. Fashion is very paramount to Arabian women. Whether it’s getting their hair done at an expensive saloon or just having lavish make up on their face it is important for every outing. There are three women saloon in my neighbor hood, but that is little bit as compared to the male saloon. There are over fifteen men saloon where the guys go and waste their money ( if you ask me but after all I should not be talking, women waste more at their saloons). Every day the saloons are packed with customers waiting to shave their beard, trim their mouth stash, line their Jackson, wash their hair but grow their hair. Few actually cut their hair, and it by far cheaper at the men saloon to get a hair cut than the women. I simply sent my daughter with her father to get her hair cut there, it save me 50 Saudi Riyal. In my next blog I’ll detail you more about the stores and shopping experiences I’ve had over the years. If you’re wondering what I’m wearing, well I’m wearing my nightgown, it’s 10:30 p.m in Arabia, 7:30 p.m in England and 3:00 p.m in USA. Goodnight, sleep tight don’t let the bed bugs bite. |

That's a great analogy between the sex lives of celebrities and the dresses of Arabian women. Not many Americans know what the real story is or what is true, we just get photo's and sensational stories. Thanks for this blog.
