St. Lucia Workshop
|
I just got back from two weeks in St. Lucia (I didn't know where it was either) where I was conducting a small workshop at the Folk Research Centre (FRC) in the capitol, Castries. St. Lucia is a beatiful little country with extremely polite people, a relatively high standard of living (compared to others i've seen)and a very interesting history. My time there was spent hiking up some of the many hills, scuba diving (Dive fair Helen gave me a positive experience), swimming at the beach, driving all over the island to see old folks, and of course conducting my workshop. For anyone interested in visiting i recommend it highly, though i cannot give you much advice on where to stay other than to avoid the Sandals resorts as I understand that they have a poor record in a number of socially responsible areas. If you are looking for a resort try the Windjammer as it is run by some fairly decent folks and is quite a pleasant place. Other advice i can offer is that you be prepared to rent a car or take your life into your hands with the many roaming vans that serve as mass transit there. For excitement climb the Gros Piton, a wild spire of a mountain that gouges out of the sea along with its neighbor the Petite Piton. For food try the local Roti, a curry sandwich type thing wrapped in something like a big floppy chipati, and get your fill of amazing fish at the Anse la Raye fish market on Friday nights. Whatever you do, don't leave the island without trying the fish cakes. Other interesting touristy things to do are to take the skyride throught the jungle canopy, or visit the drive in volcano. Snorkeling and boat rides are of course available as well. Mostly though you should rent a car or get on some random vans in the morning and get out and see the little towns that are scattered in the valleys and on the mountain tops. The best thing about St. Lucia for me was definitely the people. If any of you meet an old man named Pirate, tell him i said hello and ask him about going to Atlantic City. Safe travels. |
